Happily Surprised

I finally saw this movie after meaning to for many years, and I must say, I was happily surprised by it. It obviously is slightly hokey by today's standards, but I thought it was a great mash-up of Victorian, Modern, and Classic cinema (I'm thinking of the score, which sounded right out of a 40s or 50s movie).

I guess because the plot sounded so weird I expected it would be terrible, but I quite enjoyed it as a fun and interesting little film. It was a great nod to 19th century sci-fi, but with an obvious modern twist. And even though the love story element took up a bit more of the film than I wanted, it was still fun and believable. Overall I enjoyed it for sure. Anyone else?

It's a clever enjoyable film, saw it when it first came out. The score was done by one of the greatest film composers - Miklós Rózsa.

Of course! There are many someone elses out there who love this movie. I first saw it on cable in 1980. And I've probably seen it at least a couple dozen more times since. One thing I want to mention is that love story was also happening offscreen. Malcolm McDowell & Mary Steenburgen met on that film, fell in love, married and they have two terrific grown kids together. Lily's trying to act and Charlie's writing and directing. They divorced some years later, but they remain close.
