One scene to stick out in my mind is when H.G. Wells enters a modern day fast food joint and tries french fries for the first time. I'm sure they must've been around in the 1890s.
The more I study it, the greater the puzzle becomes. The Golden Voyage of Sinbad
Well he apparently didn't know what he was going to get when ordering something called "french fries", but they turned out to his surprise to be pommes frites, which maybe he liked to eat for all you know. There's nothing nonsensical about the scene at all.

Coming from the 1890s? I don't know--maybe not...?
Now if he'd come from a more recent time, yeah, sure. But he didn't, and I don't know if they had such a thing in 1890s England or if they called them "chips" in that time like they have in more recent eras....
Go Google it and report your findings back here. Now I wanna know that myself hehehehe
