Since Hollywood is remaking everything these day's, it is inevitable this 'classic' will be remade as well. My thought's on casting the remake would be Jude Law as Holmes/Well's, Christian Bale as John/Jack, Rachel Weisz as Amy and a cameo by Malcolm McDowell as Chief Inspector of Scotland Yard. Any other thought's/prospect's for casting idea's?
No one who loves it, as I do, it's just how Hollywood is doing nothing 'but' remakes. It is inevitable it 'will' be done. May as well give Hollywood some input from true fans.
OoO, I like that casting!! Even though, I hope a remake never happens! Loved the cameo! Maybe David Warner could make a cameo too, along with Mary Steenburgen.
Heck Yes;...that would be too cool! Just as long as 'Horrorwoody' does the original, I could handle it. They (Horrorwoody) screwed up 'Flight of the Phoenix' another fave of mine from the mid-sixties. It's unfortunate, but that's what's being done,...and if input from fan's help's in any way,...maybe they'll get it right. Rock On!

Who would want to make a remake of this classic movie!!!! It's a great story with a great cast..... Malcom McDowell was excellent as H.G. Wells, and I really like David Warner as Stevenson-Jack The Ripper!!!!!! I love the idea of time travel, and this movie does it very well..... "S T E V E N S O N!!!!!!!" For 1979 this was a great movie with very good special effects for the limited time they are used!!!! Don't destroy this movie by making a remake, and juicing it up with massive amounts of CGI special effects... The story and very good acting is what makes this movie fantastic!!!!!!!!
I know what you mean JAFO,...but you KNOW Horrorwood will get around to it. They've gone and screwed with one of my all time fave horror film's the Omen. And really screwed up Flight of the Phoenix (a real classic Jimmy Stewart flick) So it's just a matter of 'time'. (Pun intended) I too wish Hollywood would leave well enough alone. I'm sure they'll even eventually redo JAWS et. al. They suck! (Hollywood remakes) But if in anyway I/we can at least give those Corp. asses an Idea of good casting (Dennis Quaid in Flight of the Phoenix was ALL WRONG) then I'll at least put my two cent's in. Rock On!
I always found it funny that the movies that should be remade are the ones that had good intentions but were poorly executed like "The Star Chamber". But the classics are always remade worse than the originals merely for profit. A great movie should be left to stand on its own.
I like your choices. I can see Law as Wells and Weisz would make a good damsel in distress. Bale is capable of playing very beguiling characters. Id like to see him really stretch his acting muscles as a charismatic Jack the Ripper relishing in the decadent world of modern day America. He could make a living harvesting organs on the black market, pretending to perform back alley abortions and providing cadavers for medical colleges.
Knowing Hollywood, I can almost see them going with a few American actors with bad Brit accents. Law doesn't have a great box office record as a leading man and remakes are always deluged with heavy $$$$ corporate promotion (ie. Coca-Cola, GM, Snapple, McDonald's, etc.)
I totally agree. Last night that John Carpenter 'wreck' 'They Live' was on. Why not just remake the 'crappy' movies like that and leave the classic's alone? It's all $$$$ to the corp. asses and a heartbreak for us true movie fans. They've gone (Horrorwood) and remade one of my all time fave scary movies "The Omen" to open on 6-6-6. Just like the original did in 1976 the 6th of June. What a load of crap. Next they'll mess with JAWS & The Godfather. We need to rally and at least give Hollywood some good 'casting' ideas for us fans if they're going to screw around with all these great flicks. Rock On!
Yeah, I wish they would take some advice from the fans. (though it was pretty weak, I gotta admit I got a soft spot for "They Live!!") What they need to do is remake that awful "A Sound of Thunder". A good idea (and a great Ray Bradbury story) turned to *beep* by a lame duck director.
And also they gotta stop using all these tv teens, rap and reality tv goons in these blockbuster movies. There are more talented actors than trashy kids from the O.C. or Smallville. The rappers are only good for gangster and 'hood movies and barely even that. And Survivor and American Idol contestants as actors????? You gotta be kidding me!! Makes about as much sense as casting Paris Hilton in a movie. I don't think being a scenester, having a rich daddy or having your named Googled a thousand times a day should ever give you enough clout to land a part in a movie. But this is where we are. Ingredients for a Hollywood blockbuster weekend movie:
12 Coca Cola/Pepsi, Apple pc, GM/Ford/Chrysler/Lexus ad placements/product tie-ins.
1 spoiled socialite
1 rapper with at least 2 top ten hits (or 9 bullet wounds)
1 reality tv star
15 cameos by has-been actors, rockers, athletes, gossip whores and future Surreal Life cast members.
1 rehashed, retreaded and 40 times rewritten plot masquerading as a sequel or remake.
1 has-been director, replacing 3 others who had a better vision but butted heads with the studio over casting or the rehashed/retreaded/rewritten plot.
Oh, yeah...and a small group of veteran actors who barely have any chemistry together and/or hate the project but were lured in by a big payday.
Now blend together, bake till any holiday weekend, allow extra time for rewrites, CGI and lawsuits and $100 mil later.....WALLLAHH!!!! Another mediocre Hollywood production that won't recoup it's money till a year after the dvd's released.
You are so on the $$$$ swinggold. Maybe you & I should start 'writing' 'good' movies together and? I love to write and it's obvious you are well versed, as well as intelligent AND funny I want to add. Hollywood has slid down the Hollywood Hill's so to speak and into HELL!!!! Rock On! p.s.I 'despise' most CGI,...it tries to become the 'story' e.g. "The Day After Tomorrow!" I didn't care for that at all.
Thanx, TC! Sounds like a good idea. Im sure we could create better movies than what we're being tortured with lately. Im one of those guys who watches the whole dvd from the previews and production notes to the commentaries and deleted scenes. When I see a good movie, I like to know what the director and screenwriters did that these other hacks can't seem to accomplish. You'd think with all the resources Hollywood has, they'd be putting out the best movies possible. Instead, we're stuck with style-over-substance while the independent and foreign movie markets run circles around them. Then Hollywood buys the rights to those movies for a sequel or an American remake (Shall We Dance), throws a ton of money into it and manages to ruin a great classic.
I hate CGI too. It's being overused & abused. You're right, CGI is now "the show". Movies like Van Helsing, The Mummy and League of Ex. Gents, show how much of a crutch CGI has become in the industry. Weak scripts are constantly being supported by special fx.
Right On Swinggold! I agree 100%!!! I have a few Ideas and some 'partial' screenplay's, novel's and have published Poetry,...but am ready to get back to work (writing) full-time now. I have an idea about Vietnam that no one has thought of yet, but want to get to know you better before I start throwing Ideas around. Two of my ideas (One was stolen from ex-High School Chum Kevin Costner 'The Postman was my idea) the other 'Mission To Mars' was soooooo similar in 'View' I have to do some major rewrites to get around the similaritites. But my screenplay for a first trip to Mars was started in 1996,...so go figure. I want to do a deep psychological Vietnam movie, with virtually no CGI! HA! I want to work on character development and emotions rather than "Hey look,...we just blew the hell outta' Cambodia and didn't hit anything!" . Do you Google? Otherwise my e-mail is [email protected]. More info to come once we connect etc. Rock On Thomas The Cat!

"Build me a theatre, and they will come."
Why have the Chicago Cubs, with rare exception, had pathetic ballclubs for the last 100 years? Because the fans pack Wrigley Field whether the Guppies are in 1st or last place. So why spend the money and effort to make classic movies when they'll flock to any crap as long as it has the necessary fireworks (cgi, violence, sex) and publicity?

Wells - Paul Bettany Stevenson - James Purefoy Amy - Jennifer Connelly Lt. Mitchell - Paul Giamatti
this is a great idea, no doubt, but the execution was flawed. there is absolutely NO character development. i would love to see more of the interaction between stevenson and wells before stevenson leaves on the machine, and more about why the ripper rips.
Like everyone in this message board, I loved this movie. But if they did remake this, I would have to agree with Christian Bale as Jack the Ripper, Rachel Weisz as Amy, and have Paul Bettany as H.G. Wells. And it would be cool if all three original leads could make an appearance. As for the director, I think Christopher Nolan should have that task. Other than that, nothing more to add.
Great choice for director, I am at a lapse as to who Paul Bettaney is but am going to look his stats/etc. up now. (I'm Baaaaack!) Ha! Hmmmm,... no wonder I am not familiar with PB. I have not seen any of the movies/TV he's been in. I Love The Da Vinci Code BOOK. But am waiting for the flick to come on cable as it was reviewed harshly. Don't know how good an actor he is, but he sure LOOK'S the part! Rock On!
Arghhh people and remakes it's a disease I tell ya at IMDb! These must be the same ones who become producers who can't come up with original scripts anymore!
I think Nick Meyer wouldn't let anyone touch this, unless he's involved personally as a writer/ producer. But if that happens, I would say Daniel Craig as HG Wells, Liam Neeson as Jack and Rachel McAdams as Amy.
