Why the references to the mayor of Columbus?


As Wells travels back in time, one of the last news quotes is about the assassination of the mayor of Columbus, Ohio.

When Wells wakes up after spending the night with Amy, one of the news stories from her bedside radio is the same story about a man going into City Hall in Columbus, Ohio and shooting and killing the mayor.

No such event happened in real life. I don't think there are any other news quotes during the time travel sequence that are fictional.

Any idea how/why this ended up in the movie?

Perhaps a reference to the actual murder the previous year (1978) of Mayor Moscone (along with Supervisor Harvey Milk) in City Hall of San Francisco? But changed to Columbus, Ohio for various reasons- maybe the trial of killer Dan White hadn't taken place yet...
