Can someone explain the ending and the key?

I didn't get how H.G. sent John off to "infinity" by pulling out that key. Can someone explain that to me? Thanks much.

It wasn't the key (meaning the red key which prevented the machine from returning to where it left) but the thing with the crystal was supposed to be the mechanism which stabilized the device and made time travel possible (sorry but can't remember what it's actually called in the film). If the stabilizer was removed, the person in the time machine would be propelled into infinity without the machine, making it impossible to stop at an actual date in time. I think the doctor had already activated the machine so by removing the crystal while the machine was activated, he was basically hurled into infinity without the machine, thus unable to ever materialize at a given point in time again and just trapped in the infinity of time. That's how he explained it to his friends at the beginning of the movie.
I was excited to see this become a TV series but I guess they put the series on hold because another channel also has a time travel series coming out. Hopefully they'll eventually release the "Time after Time" series. This is one of my favorite movies.

Thanks for this, KSzir. I guess I must have blanked that out from the beginning of the movie (I thought it was kind of a slow start with a lot of talk - similar to "The Time Machine" I guess). But why have the "crystal" at all, what purpose does it serve? Seems dangerous and not very useful, unless you've got a time-traveling serial killer you need to stop of course.

He said the "crystal" which was called something like an "equinox" was what made time travel possible. It was basically the item which sent the machine through time. I can't remember what he called it (Vaporizing Equinox or similar) but I can clearly remember the next line was "It's what makes time travel possible". That's what the thing was supposed to be.
