The Ending

I've wondered about what happened to Stevenson ever since I saw the film during its first HBO run. It is established that the crystal key being removed sends the traveler through time without the machine. Not a word is said about one being sent to infinity.
At the end, Wells says he sent him to infinity by pulling it out. The machine hadn't even been turned on. WTF? The ending needs clarification. The DVD commentary is of no help. The matter isn't even addressed.

The louder paranormal "debunkers" argue, the more terrified they are it's all true.

Yeah that was a bit iffy.

It's also not a safe place to put such a dangerous object. Some kid could come along and yank out the crystal when you're setting the date, and you're a goner.

Presumably, without the machine to set a destination, you'd be traveling through time without end. So Herbert was correct, Jack was sent into infinite travel, never to stop in any given time.
