The auto/pedestrian accident involving Stevenson

I'm a little confused. In the movie, when Wells first encounters Stevenson at the Hyatt Regency, a foot chase ensues with Wells chasing Stevenson through the streets of San Francisco. Stevenson steps off the curb and subsequently collides with a motor vehicle. An ambulance was called and Stevenson was transported to a local hospital for medical attention. Awhile later Wells arrives at the hospital and inquires about Stevenson to the admitting nursing. The nurse then tells Wells that Stevenson succumbed to his injuries from being hit by a car. Here's my question: Obviously it wasn't Stevenson that died from the auto accident, then who was it? Who was it that the nurse was talking about if it wasn't Stevenson? I think there should of been some clarification after the interaction between Wells and the admitting nurse.
