French DVD the best?

I've seen this discussed in a previous topic, but I still have some questions:

-Is the French region 2 DVD the only one that has the correct widescreen presentation of 1:85:1?

-What are the differences between the two (or more?) US R1 releases as far as aspect ratio and picture quality, if any?

-Is the French widescreen transfer available elsewhere, like a region 0 version?

-How much of an improvement over the R1 releases is the R2 in terms of picture quality?

-Is Starcrash II available on DVD anywhere besides the French-only audio as the bonus disc in the R2 package?
