Which DVD is best?

I live in the UK. I have a copy of "Starcrash" on VHS, (I know, I know - *INSERT WITTY COMMENT ABOUT MY TASTE IN MOVIES HERE*) but I've been thinking about getting it on DVD. But which version?

The French DVD (The first DVD release of the film) or any of the three US Region 1 releases?

I'm wondering if one or any of them stand out as being the best in terms of picture/sound quality, ratio, running time (Any longer cuts available?), extras, etc....

Anyone in the know?

reply

certainly not the US dvd! er, but then, maybe that is how the film was supposed to look? ha! seriously, the US version looks like it was shot on video, edited on video, and had a budget of 5 dollars. Does anyone know the specifics of how this was shot and what format, etc? Not that a pristine widescreen DVD of this film would help much, but I am curious...

reply

Is there more than one US dvd version? The one I have is full screen and pretty poor quality. The title is "Female Space Invaders".

Yes, as well as the "Female Space Invaders" version, there are (to my knowledge) two Region 1 versions available with the "Starcrash" title. They have them both at Amazon.com. (both links below)

What the differences are, if any, between them I don't know.

The one I rented was the Substance DVD presented in 1.85:1 letterbox widescreen, and obviously ripped from VHS. I'd have preferred to see the film in actual DVD quality...

I finally got the Substance version, too.

Also, I found this page:

I've never seen a "Starcrash" DVD with this cover before.

I'd say spring for the Region 2 -- The French DVD has a fantastic transfer of a positive print shown in the correct 1:85:1 widescreen (16x9) with English, French and Italian audio options. It is also a 2 disc set and Bitto Albertini's STAR CRASH II is included as a bonus item, also widescreen 1:66:1 (16x9) but no English audio.

Yes, I was looking for a copy of the french edition, but I couldn't seem to find one online.

According to information given to me by Garrett Gilchrist here: http://www.rifftrax.com/iriffs/starcrash-1978-riffed-garrett-gilchrist , Starcrash will get a proper American DVD release on October 17, 2009. I don't know which version it is. There's the uncut version and the cut Roger Corman version. I hope it's the uncut version. so I can use it with Garrett's commentary.

Shout Factory just released,as part of thier "Roger Corman's Cult Classics Collection",a brand new widescreen(1.78:1)2-disc DVD of it today. I was lucky enough to get it a day early through Amazon.com. It's the US release(deleted & extended scenes are on disc 2)with two commentaries by film historian Stephen Romano, the theatrical trailer(presented three times, twice with separate commentary by Joe Dante(who edited the trailer, the last he would do for New World)& Eli Roth, taken from the Trailers From Hell website)and many more extras. I love this movie and this DVD is just awesome.

The new two disc Special Edition Shout! Factory DVD is simply first-rate; it's loaded with a mouth-watering wealth of wondrous extras and was well worth the fifteen bucks I paid for it.

1,000 mini-bios and I feel like I'm just getting started

The Shout disc is Corman's theatrical cut while the French dvd is the longer Euro cut. If Stella enthusiastically yells "Full Speed" at the start when they go into hyperspace you're watching the longer version. RIP John Barry.
