Why was Joe Spinell dubbed?
IMDB says he used his voice but there is no way that is his voice. I've watched him many, many times and his voice sounds nothing like that!

He wasn't dubbed, it's his voice. He has more range as an actor that some give him credit for. The commentary track on the blu-ray specifically talks about people thinking he's dubbed, but that he isn't. The only actors in the movie who were dubbed were Caroline Munro and Judd Hamilton. For everyone else, it's their voice. A lot of it was dubbed after (not recorded live on set), but was done so by the actual actors.
shareI've read that too. The people who made the movie can swear up and down he wasn't dubbed by another actor, but they're huge flakes. They either remember wrong from 50 years ago, or they're lying for whatever reason. It's far beyond obvious his character's dialogue was dubbed, it's one of the most obvious dubs in the history of cinema. I'm sure he had really good range though.
shareAnd why are you so certain? The commentary track on the blu-ray is by a guy (Steven Ramano) who researched the film for years and is enough of an authority on it he's recorded multiple commentary tracks. I trust his conclusion more than random fans who can't accept Joe Spinell could have been capable of altering his voice when looping his dialog in post production.
shareEDIT: My bad, what I had read before was that the budget was so low they could only afford to dub a couple of characters and everyone else had to be recorded on the day, which obviously isn't true. But what I just read in the trivia section is that they could only afford to have a few actors DUB THEMSELVES and that everyone else was dubbed by other actors.
Personally, I still find it difficult to believe that's Joe Spinell's voice. Sounds like a generic cartoon voice actor heard a million times back in the day. Maybe Spinell had a secret uncredited voice acting career...
