Sounds like a re-edit, new special effects, restored stuff.
A bit like Adywan's wonderful Star Wars revisions.

All they'd have to do is cut down the shuttle ride to the Enterprise by 75% and I'd watch it... I'm not sure I need new special effects.
shareNo way. I still love that sequence and the Jerry Goldsmith music that accompanies it.
shareLove the music, love the sequence, but I think it's too long.
Most of the movie I love the slow, thoughtful, deliberate pacing. It conveys awe, wonder, fear, the unknown, danger - all of that, but with them approaching the Enterprise, the thrill of it wears off, and I can particularly hear it in the music. It has to cycle at least one too many times and it winds up sounding like a video game with a 10 second battle theme and it just loops ad-nauseum the whole game long. This time, though, Goldsmith knew the length requisite for the piece and tried to beef up the orchestra at the last stretch, but to me it just winds up sounding like they're running out the clock. It sounds like Goldsmith forgot how long it had to be and panicked in the orchestra pit.
Ehh... I don't hear it that way. I've heard the film version and the earlier one (which is also great and the same length) and I think JG knew what he was doing. Editing the sequence would require trimming the music and that would probably not be pleasant.
