Bad costume design

The uniforms look like pajamas and the colors are too bland, no wonder they got replace for the Wrath Of Khan on wards.

Too bad they showed your genitals :)

But imagine someone like Christina Hendricks in such a uniform 

Robert Fletcher, along with Roddenberry himself, designed the "TMP" uniforms.

The ensemble cast then refused to wear these uniforms for a second feature film due to their clunky and impractical nature, so Fletcher came up with the "Monster Maroon" uniform variant which became a mainstay throughout the remaining original-cast movies.

The maroon jackets were also used in an alternate timeline during the run of "TNG" when the crew of "Yesterday's Enterprise" (NCC-1701-C) were shown to be wearing the same jacket/trousers combination as in "TWOK," sans the underlying turtlenecks.

The cast said they would never do more films with TMP uniforms.

Read somewhere Kirk's admiral uniform was gonna be the template for all TMP uniforms but decided they wanted them all different.

reply

Don't think anyone is gonna give TMP any best costume awards.

They were too, how do you say, "BL-A-A-A-A-A-A-H". Just like the movie.

reply

My guess is that the TWOK uniforms were based on Horatio Hornblower since Nicholas Meyer was a fan of those stories.

reply

The Wrath of Khan costumes were cool, but its hard to believe that Starfleet had the same designer as Khan's group who were stranded on that planet for decades
