What was up with William's Wife?

When Jack calls to tell her about the funeral and about sending the the remains why is she so cold and slightly hostile?

William is shown to be painfully pure throughout the film never partaking in any of the local delights. All he asks for is a game of squash and someone to have a beer yet. He is the definition of repressed proper straight as they come old fashioned English Gentleman so why does she act like she doesn't give a shit?

My only possible theory i can come up with was maybe he was a closeted Homosexual. The whole i just want somebody to play squash with could be taken as a code perhaps but apart from that i'm out.

I loved his character it was really sad when he died and to stick a bit of a Fuck you in after his death was a bit salty
