Was this thought of as gritty or realistic in 1979?

My problem with this movie is that it's way too slick. Middler is totally unconvincing as an earthy southern blues musician. It's like a Broadway-style imitation of a female rock star.

Was it seen as at all realistic in its era? I was too young to be interested in it when it was out, but I remember it was wildly popular.

I just rewatched it today and thought she gave a powerhouse performance. No wonder she was nominated for an Oscar.

And no wonder she was pissed when she lost to Sally Field.
