What is she doing in her room at the beginning, where it is dark, looking in her mirror, and doing something that I can best describe as grunting at herself. Was she trying to sober up or something?? Any answer would help.

I believe she was warming up. You can't just get out on a stage and start singing like that, cold. It will shred your vocal chords.
