who was Sarah Willingham?

did they ever mention what she did for a living ? Obviously she was Rose's lesbian love - but I was just wondering if it was ever mentioned what she did professionally, or how she met Rose.

reply

I think it explains it in the book. It's been more than 20 years since i've read it though.

Sarah Willingham was a failed Avon sales rep who later had minimal success when she invented the Flobie.

This is off topic but I always thought it was funny that they were together, because they look and seem like such opposites. Sarah is polished, conservatively dressed, has a cigarette holder, and more ladylike and The Rose is more on the "raunchy" side, by some people's standards, her hair and make-up is always messy, she's crude, and blunt, drunk, and self destructive. I would love to know how and where they possibly could have met. Or if Sarah possibly changed into that kind of woman.

It says in the book that Sarah Willingham was a disciple of the isle of lesbos, or something like that.

She and Rose had a previous relationship (Rose was Bi, Sarah was a lesbian), but went their seperate ways. Sarah was an ultra-rich heiress who of course didn't work, but mainly hung out with celebrities.

<< THERE'S A BOOK?! LINK THIS UP! >>

The "book" (The Rose by Leonore Fleischer) was just a cheapie, paperback novelization of the film. Movie studios used to do that as a tie-in to a major film being released.

But the details of the plots of these books were thought up by whoever the book's writer was, not the original screenwriter or even the film's director. It's more like the films would inspire the books. So regardless of what the "book" might say about Sarah's past, these details wouldn't have been in the minds of the actors or the filmmaker when the movie was being shot.

It appears you can buy the book here: http://www.abebooks.com/9780708816639/Rose-Novel-Fleischer-Leonore-Gol dman-0708816630/plp

Or cut + paste: http://www.abebooks.com/9780708816639/Rose-Novel-Fleischer-Leonore-Goldman-0708816630/plp

Apparently this busy lady also did the novelizations of: Shadowlands, Rain Man, Agnes of God, Annie, Ice Castles, Heaven Can Wait, Making Love, The Fisher King, Fame, Flatliners, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Funny Lady, Rapa Nui, Hero, The Neverending Story, The Lords Of Flatbush, Accidental Hero, Junior, The Net, Les Miserables (!), Three Amigos, Lipstick...not to mention(the GRIPPING, I'm sure) Dolly: Here I Come Again.

My question is why did Houston get so mad when he saw those two making out? Men usually like to see women get it on. That part always puzzled me.

Not all men. Some become extremely jealous and insecure, like they're not enough.

Old post, but was apparently never quite answered. Houston was the one character in the movie that the audience could identify with, and even in the '70s, mainstream movies tended to use homosexuality as another way to depict the extent of a character's depravity. Hence, Houston had to show outrage, not acceptance.

One of the first thing she says is, "Rudge said you were *beep* up." This is a way of telling you that Rudge CALLED her to come in to see Rose--Rudge knew that seeing Rose with her old lesbian lover was definitely gonna hit Houston right between the eyes. Sarah mentions having had a professor at college as a lover, she's dressed as a very rich, high-society chick from that era (mid to late 70s), blonde, blue-eyed, fair, slim, exuding class and money--in other words everything Rose was not--a total case of opposites attracting. In the book it explains their relationship. She was the Rose's first lesbian encounter and she taught her how to develop her "look" on stage, cleaned up the rough edges, etc., traveled by yacht with her, etc. She also got her into pills and heavy drugs. The point is, she was called back into the picture by Rudge so he could get rid of Houston.

She also got her into pills and heavy drugs.

Do you mean Sarah got Rose into pills and heavy drugs or vice-versa ?

I would think it would be vice-versa, but the way you wrote it makes me think otherwise.

reply

Rose was already into heroin and pills at the time--Sarah was into more higher priced stuff like cocaine, ludes and such. It's been a while since I read the book, but I remember there was mention that some heavy drug usage went down on Sarah's yacht out in the Mediterranean.
