Swastika pins
Are they wearing swastika pins on their jackets?
shareSwastika pins are a anti-nazi symbol used by punks. Still used today.
sharewell thank you.
shareNot entirely true.
I would never say that the Ramones or any other punk rockers were wearing swastikas because they liked Nazis, but most of them did it because it was an ultimate form of rebellion, especially against their parent's generation, who fought in WWII. They lifted it from the bikers they saw in movies, who wore them for the same reason.
It's a pretty juvinille and tasteless way to rebel IMO, but a lot of people did it. I wouldn't read anything deeper than that into it.

Besides, Joey Ramone was Jewish!!!! DUUHH!!!!

this is a terrible argument. you're ignoring the idea of self-hatred, rejecting tradition that has been passed to you, anything. it could have been anything, for any reason.
i've always found it a difficult line to trace, you know.. where the irony ends, whatever. in this case, you know, rock n' roll high school/the ramones, it isn't so provocative a statement. but i had seen the symbol worn by other bands, i wanted to read more on the matter
For clarification, because it is deeper than that:
A lot of early punks wore swastikas for sheer shock value. Sid Vicious often wore swastika shirts in public and at shows. Extreme right-wing punks, (almost exclusively hardcore punks) adopted this symbol. Nazi punks were very common in the hardcore scene in the early eighties, prompting the Dead Kennedys (who had attracted a lot of nazi followers because of the nazi's failure to recognize sarcasm in songs like "Kill the Poor" and "California Uber Alles") to write "Nazi Punks *beep* off" which greatly reduced the number of nazis in the mainstream (relatively) punk community. However, there are still some in the hardcore faction.
Yeah. those are the fuccers that mess up shows around here. We have a couple and theyll come just to start fights with black punks and other stupid *beep*
shareThe more things change, the more they stay the same, sadly...We had the same problem in the NYC punk scene back in the 80's. :( Most of us, even though we were technically strangers, treated each other almost like family at shows...except those douchebags...Sad to see the tradition continued. :-\
shareOf course, you're right.
And the swastika is NOT an anti-nazi symbol, unless it is crossed-out!
You do know that the swastika is a much older sacred symbol appropriated by Hitler and the Nazi Party to personify their hate? Although the latter interpretation has eclipsed it, it didn't start out that way.

Future events such as these will affect you....in the future!
Yeah, I know, but it's not relevant here because punks definitely referred to the "Nazi Swastika".

Thank you for the reminder, Lady Jane.
It can't be said too often.
"The Beamer Xperience: 9 feet wide home cinema bliss."
Yes, the Swastika has nothing to do with Hitler! Except that he stole it (and reversed it).
I wish that this very peaceful symbol would once again be appreciated for what it truly means.
A religious symbol that simply means auspiciousness and good fortune should not be allowed to be associated with a movement of hate.
This would truly be an anti-Nazi movement.
The Ramones did not wear Swastikas. However the song "To day your love, tomorrow the world" clearly shows that the boys weren't afraid of singing about the subject though. Anyway, they weren't serious about it. Joey was jewish btw..

I'm dredging this up from the back of my mind, but as I recall Deedee grew up in Berlin, and was pretty mystified with the whole Nazi mythos. He used to wear little swatstika pins and he had a SS saber, as I recall.
shareLOL WTF?
Half the 'punks' at the time, didn't even know what a Swastika was, they knew it caused oooohh's and ahhh's. Siouxsie wore the swastika at a lot of shows, years later saying she thought it ment something totally different. Sid did the same thing, shock value. David Bowie got off the plane in Germany and gave a Heil Hitler salute. DeeDee Ramone wrapped himself up in a swastika flag for a reaction (he even states himself this was the reason)
the anti nazi symbol, hahaha. Ok.
I saw someone said punks didn't even know what it really ment. And thats very true. As above mentioned punks like Sid would wear it for the ultimate shock value. And its true that it's only an anit-nazi symbol if its crossed out, like the Dead Kennedy's did. So, even if they where wearing it on their jackets(which I doubt) it most likely wasn't ment to even really symbolize what the nazi symbolized it for.
sharei'm pretty sure they knew what it meant. How could they have known the amount of shock it would generate if they didn't?
"Do your mothers know that you're Ramones?!?!"
It looked like some sort of symbols on their jackets. I never really paid attention the other night when I watched this movie I hate to say it.

I always thought the pins said "US"
