Don't get me wrong....I like bad movies. Street Fighter is entertaining, as is Killer Klowns from Space, and movies made by Ed Wood. I'm also a fan of slapstick comedies like Anchorman, Kung Pow, Wayne's World, Weird Science, etc. etc. But this wasn't even remotely entertaining...in fact, everybody I watched it with agreed that it was an excruciatingly painful thing to sit through. When I logged on here I expected to see something in the 2 point range, but wow, this movie actually has fans. This world is even more pathetic than I thought...that's just my opinion of course.
ROCK 'N' ROLL HIGH SCHOOL IS THE BEST MOVIE EVER!!!!! how can you not like this movie it's def. entertaining ...I love the RAMONES soo much and this movie is awesome im speechhless that someone wouldnt like this movie!!!
I respect you opinion but I am with the second poster on this one. I am a hardcore Rock N' Roll highschool fan. The music is amazing and the dialogue is pretty sharp.
Plus when I was younger I had a major crush on P.J Soles and I have always loved Ramones music so I can't say that I was a tough crowd.
Now the sequel. That was bad!
"pack of monkeys in my pocket, my sisters ready to go"
'Music is amazing'? Oh my gosh. I'm starting to realize why this movie has such a high rating...not because of it's cinematic value, but because a bunch of Ramones fans come on here and defaultly give it a 10.
Not only is that ridiculous, but even moreso is the fact that there are so many human beings that listen to such horrible music. The Ramones are one of the worst bands to have ever made it in this world. They have no talent whatsoever, all of their songs have the exact same chord composure, and their lyrics are anything but intellectual. And don't even try to tell me they're original...even for their day. Punk rock existed...it just wasn't popular, and there was a reason for that.
I am not going to argue, the fact is you don't like the Ramones music and that is fine. There is no way you could love this film without enjoying the music.
You are right about the fans coming in and raising the rating, just as people who don't like it lower it (what did you give a 1 or a 2?). That is why they show the average. I don't think the number represents a films greatness in the grand scheme of things. You have to remember the people who review films here are not critics. They do not have to watch everything, instead they get to pick and choose what interest them. The rating is not a films overall quality. Instead it represents whether or not someone who wants to watch the film will enjoy it. Rock N' Roll High School is a comedy starring The Ramones. Was it funny? I thought so. Did the Ramones play their best known songs? Yes. Therefore people who want to see this film should enjoy it.
Sorry you and your friends did not like it but it is pointless to insult people who did. There is no reason for it.
"pack of monkeys in my pocket, my sisters ready to go"
THE RAMONES ARE THE BEST BAND THAT EVER LIVED!!!!! what the heck is your problem???? if the ramones are so bad then what do you listen to? i can't believe someone would say that! idk what i would do without the ramones!!!!
I agree with you! When I saw the movie Rock ´n´ Roll High School the first time in 1988 it changed my life. I have to admit actually the film is silly and I started to love it because I discoverd The Ramones. Since then I have seen more than thirty of their live shows in six different countries, mostly in Germany. Joey Ramone has one of the most awesome voices.
I'm not personally a fan, but that doesn't mean you have to totally discount their style. I've also never seen the movie, but I'm posting right now as a licensed "Music Guru." True, The Ramones were nowhere near the best punk band of all time...not even their era, for that matter (screw all you Clash and Sex Pistol disciples, the honors have to go to The Stooges and Stiff Little Fingers), but they were definetly a huge influence on American music culture. Unfortunately, America, and especially NYC, don't produce awesome bands anymore. But these guys definetly got it done, and they helped lead the way for all the punk we have now. Even though it's not my favorite style of music, it's what happened.
I'M A TEENAGE LOBOTOMY!!!...& *beep* you, cuz there wouldn't've been a stiff little fingers without a pistols and the stooges are a different era, they're not punk, they're beyond categorisation, they're in their own little category labelled "raw power"
Okay. You're wrong; i'm guessing (from the way you phrased this) that you are too young to remember the time when this film came out.
Punk/New Wave etc were VERY popular in their day.
And the Ramones, far from being just another punk band, essentially created the genre -- it was their 1977 tour in the UK that stimulated the movement.
Of the Velvet Underground's first album, it was said "Only 5000 people bought it -- but all of them started bands". The Ramones occupy a similar position.
<<<'Music is amazing'? Oh my gosh. I'm starting to realize why this movie has such a high rating...not because of it's cinematic value, but because a bunch of Ramones fans come on here and defaultly give it a 10. >>>>>>
*** Uh, dude, it's a cult film. It was made for Ramones fans and for people who understand and enjoy high camp (Corman fans). You obviously didn't get it, and that's cool, but there's no need to be so insulting to those people who did. But you obviously cared enough about it to take the time to come here to start a discussion.
I remember when this film came out, and I wasn't a Ramones fan at the time, but this film made me one because it was so much fun, and funny (loved the exploding white rats) and cool. Now, it's a killer piece of nostalgia with a cast that includes Clint Howard, PJ Soles and Vince Van Patten. If you weren't a teenager in the 70's, those names probably don't mean anything to you, which is another reason you don't get it. But I will say that my own teenage kids LOVE this film and have become second generation Ramones fans.
The Ramones kick some serious butt and who cares if their lyrics arent "intellectual"? Is your favorite band fronted by Isaac Newton? I have yet to see Rock n Roll High School, but assume it is awesome because it would be a very difficult to make a bad movie with The Ramones as the subject.
And in your first post are you refering to Street Fighter with Sonny Chiba or Van Damn? I your not dissing the 70s martial arts classic, and the van damn flick has a good bad quality about it like you said. Mortal Kombat is way better.
No, my favorite band's lead singer is Jim Morrison. Intellectual doesn't mean psychobabble, it should be insightful. I didn't say I hated the Ramones, but they just lacked a lot of talent and songwriting ability. If it's any consolation, so does Neil Young and the Rolling Stones, but they owned. But they're gone. And of course you guys are putting down the Stiff Little Fingers...the British have been oppressing the Irish for hundreds of years, why offer them relief on a movie message board?
Lacked talent and songwritng ability? yea right...Dee Dee Ramone is an awesome songwriter and so is Joey. Have you ever heard Joey's solo album or Dee Dee's?If you knew more about them than you would know how hard they worked. They didn't get along too well and it wasn't very easy for them and they still rocked. The Ramones definitely deserve more credit.
“And the Ramones, far from being just another punk band, essentially created the genre -- it was their 1977 tour in the UK that stimulated the movement”
The ramones didn’t stimulate nothing in the pistols…johnny thunders did more of that, at least for steve and sid although sid was into Dee Dee Ramone too. in fact, if u notice in interviews, every pistols member talks of the ramones as looking like “a bunch of muppets” and glenn matlock, the weediest of the pistols, chucked a pint glass at joey ramone…they thought they were ridiculous, the might’ve influenced the clash a little, and quite a few others from brit punk were fans of the band but then again u had fans of all kindsa of music in punk, u can’t hold all of them responsible for being the grandfathers of punk. only pistol to like them was old Sidney, they certainly didn’t point the pistols in any direction, they’re totally different as bands, the pistols aren’t fast, they don’t do bubblegum-rock n roll, which is basically what the ramones did (in a cool way too) but they certainly didn’t influence the pistols.
“Of the Velvet Underground's first album, it was said "Only 5000 people bought it -- but all of them started bands". The Ramones occupy a similar position”
As much as I LOVE the velvet underground…lol their arty take on things is a million miles from anything produced in England in terms of punk, that quote is a disposable cliché, kind of like when people say “Jack Kerouac sold a million pairs of levi’s and coffee machines” I agree that people started bands after seeing the ramones, yeah, but in terms of the influence being evident, no, u can’t cite three chord rock n roll and exclusively a ramones thing, 3 chord rock n roll is how modern popular music began for the mainstream.
And the ramones and/or their lyrics are not stupid, they’re just concise, to the point…why should u have to make an arty puzzle out of everything? And not good song writers LMAO how can u be bad songwriters and write catchy songs? Hm…and listen to poison heart (not the chorus, the actual verses) is that bad songwriting? I think not…btw, rocker, Jim Morrison is *beep* amazing, I totally agree…the stones? Lol I could but I won’t lol and I didn’t diss the stiff little fingers, In fact I think Wasted Life, Alternative Ulster are amazing…I just think people who rate them better than the pistols need to stop and think and see whose coming under an umbrella raised by whom and THEN look at the albums the production the content the effect, both societally and musically and THEN…start makin comparisons. I didn’t arrest Gerry Conlon boss, get over it…that aside, u got cool taste lol its just the order of kudos I disagree with, minor though…
We are all entitled to our opinions... so it doesn't bother me at all that you don't like the movie. The movie wasn't made for the Academy, it was made for a certain fanbase. And it did what it set out to do... I personally love it. The first time I saw the flick was on Showtime when I was 12 (I'm 36 now.) I have the DVD and have watched it hundreds of times. It makes me smile every time.
Where I will counterpoint with you is regarding the Ramones. I dig that you don't like their music, and that's cool. But the Ramones did nothing short of change the music scene in the 70's. They helped give birth the the entire punk scene and influenced many bands of the time including The Sex Pistols, Blondie, and The Kinks. Their influence can still be heard today in bands like U2, The Donna's, Green Day, Blink 182, and way more than I can name here. I hope you can appreciate their accomplishments even if you're not a fan.
I think you're missing the point of the ramones and punk rock in general. They didn't write intellectual lyrics. Neither did Johnny Cash or Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry or a thousand other fantastic artists. They had little musical ability, but made up for it with fantastic songwriting. They were, in essence a sped up version of 60's pop and surf bands. Sometimes music should just be fun. There's no need to prove to everyone how deep or intellectual you are as a writer. Sometimes I don't want to sit around getting stoned and talking about the lyrical meaning of a song. Sometimes I wanna dance.
And there really wasn't a punk scene when the Ramones began playing. There were bands like Television, but they wouldn't really fall into the same catergory. The Sex Pistols didn't get going until '76. AS much as you don't want to believe it, they were highly original. If you don't believe me, look up articles from the era. Every critic was shaking their head, saying "what the f--- was THAT?
As for punk not being popular at the time... Well, in '77 the Pistols had a #1 hit, and the Clash had a few commercial hits as well. Somebody must've liked punk rock. And then there were those self absorbed people who only like a song if it had the complexity of a classical piece, and some faux intellectual lyrics. Lighten up.
All the fools trying to diss the Ramones - claiming they know something about music - need to go rent END OF THE CENTURY immediately. It very clearly demonstrates how important the Ramones were to punk and music in general. Also, the songs don't all sound the same. I can hear the first five seconds of most Ramones songs and know exactly what song it is. The lyrics are better than people are giving them credit for. Maybe it's just me, but songs like "We're a Happy Family," "I Don't Care," and even something dippy like "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" have more resonance than "Riders on the Storm" does. I love the Ramones and this movie. Anyone who disagrees can go F themselves.
Quoting Rocker: "the Ramones just lacked a lot of talent and songwriting ability. If it's any consolation, so does Neil Young and the Rolling Stones"
OK so basically you don't like rock'n roll. Why would you watch a movie called Rock'n roll high school? Go rent Saturday Night fever and change your name. So you prefer Jim Morrison? Why? Cos he's a poet? Cos his lyrics are so deep? Go read some real poetry. Rock'n roll lyrics don't need no poetic license to be valid. The greatest lyrics ever are "Awam-bapaloolam-awam-pamboom".
And to Eyewant: The Bruthas are great but they did not influence the Kinks. The Kinks are from the sixites, dude.
- A point in every direction is the same as no point at all.
I love that song. It's like the singer's voice is an extra instrument, just as it should be in EVERY rock 'n roll song. If somebody wants to hear deep lyrics, read a poem!
RARHS probably deserves a 7, but I'm giving it a 10 just to annoy and counteract Androc the Troll. "Pathetic" and "your opinion" are probably found often in the same sentence.
