Doesn't the animated version of Return of the King end this way? With Gandalf saying how the world of magic will be replaced by the world of science and yadda yadda yadda?
Tolkien wrote the stories as a sort of "Mythology for Enlgand" as such it starts off very fantastical and gets less and less fantastical as it goes on. At the end of the war of the ring, the "Evil Things" (fantastic things) are being destroyed and the "World of Men" is coming into its own, meaning the elves are leaving and the dwarves are becoming more and more reclusive.
