I can't decide whether to buy this animation on DVD or not. Do you recommend me to buy it, or isn't it worth it? I have Bakshi's adaptation of LoTR, but only to have it in my collection.
I recommend it, if not for the good adaptation, but also for the song "Where there's a whip, there's a way."
This song is an instant clsssic with the kids, as well as adults who need a device to frighten said children into compliance.
Ill tell you though, I am Bass/Rankin biased. Anything flowing from the pencils of these geniouses is a solid gold hit. From the gritty animation, to the punchy and vivacious voice acting, their movies capture what I would think as imperative to the mystique and overall imagination of Tolkiens creation.
It's not perfect (especially if you're a Tolkien purist) but its much better than the Bakshi stuff. I was going to post a critique of that movie in the proper forum, but the folks over there seem to have turned it into their personal message board posting all kinds of stuff that has nothing to do with the movie. At least the Rankin Bass version doesn't portray the Orcs as painted over Nazi soldiers (I hate rotoscoping in cartoons), and is also free of the other problems which plague the Bakshi version: http://flyingmoose.org/tolksarc/bakshi/bakshi.htm
Are you kidding me? i cant believe what im hearing. I loved Bakshi's movie! The music is brilliant, the voice acting is great too and the rotoscoping thing when they paint over the orcs is brilliant. It's what makes the orcs and nazguls look frightening, it really makes them stand out to the other characters.
If i could add a thing that might concern this subject a little more: I thought that "Return of the king" was a tv-movie and therefore not out on dvd. If it is so and there is a dvd, should i get it considering that i liked bakshi's movie? or will this one be a disappointment?
Well, it had it's many flaws, but it was a very cute reproduction. It was more for children than the modern movies, and I cracked up at "Frodo of the Nine Fingers." I would recommend this movie to you...
"Ahh! He's so pefect. I am in love with Zachary Jones!"
Rankin/Bass' "Return of the King" was created when it was reported that Ralph Bakshi couldn't finish "Lord of the Rings". As far as animation is concerned, compared to today's animation - yes.
