The producers/writers should have realized......!

One of the many problems with this film is that it ignores everything in fellowship and towers during the prologue because they only had the film rights to hobbit and king. This causes plot holes and not to mention aggravation. HOWEVER if they had read the appendices they would see that there is a detailed account of the events in lotr in chronological order. So they technically had the rights to the whole trilogy and could have used much more material. Not that it would have improved the movie at all.... maybe a little

Granted, Ralph Bakshi's LOTR film was in production at just about the exact same time, so who knows how much that affected this film? The oversimplification of such a complicated story (and all the added song interludes which mostly just sidetrack from it) for the kiddies certainly didn't help.
