One of the finest sports films ever
This movie doesn't get nearly the respect it deserves. It is raunchy, profane and yes, funny in places. Its greatness, however, is the unflinching look at what is essentially a brutal game played for the greater profit of monopolistic owners and coaches. They spare no expense or underhanded trick to cannibalize athletes.
Yes many of the players see some of the money, but this does not compensate them for all they will endure after a few short years in the limelight - if they are lucky enough to stay in the NFL for a while. I like football, but I do sometimes have guilt feelings about the players who are paying the price for the gladiator sport which will ravage their bodies and mind in middle-age. Super Bowls aren't what they used to be for me. Gent got organized football right.
