The Assistant Coach/Defensive Coordinator

It seemed like he was the real disciplinarian, always trying to undercut the head coach.

Nah. He was doing exactly what the coach wanted. The manner in which they teamed up to manipulate Delma into shooting up pain killers makes that pretty clear.

The scene where the coordinator incites a fight between Joe Bob and a defender in practice shows the relationship between the head coach and the assistant. The assistant coach knows his role is to be the bad guy and the lightning rod for the players' hostility, while the head coach remains above it all. Both coaches are grinning from ear to ear when they see Joe Bob fighting the man opposite him because they were in on it. Classic good cop/ bad cop.
