So who were all of the characters supposed to be?

It goes without saying that Nick Nolte's character was based on the real life Peter Gent, that Mac Davis' QB character Seth Maxwell was Don Meredith, and Tom Landry was the inspiration for B.A. Strother. I've also heard it stated, though I can't remember where, that Delma Huddle the young black WR adverse to taking pain killers is supposed to be "Bullet" Bob Hayes. My father when he saw the movie told me he thought the two brothers who own the team in the film were a dead ringer for the Murchison brothers who owned the Dallas Cowboys at that time.

But what about the other main characters such as the Bo Svenson's character Joe Bob, John Matuszak as O.W. Shaddock, or Charles Durning as Coach Johnson? I had always assumed that the religious backup QB in the film was supposed to be Roger Staubach but an ESPN article I ran across claimed that Gent told the Washington Post after the film came out that it wasn't any one particular player but rather a composite character.

It probably wouldn't have been Staubach, since he only joined the NFL in 1969, and Peter Gent played with Dallas from 1964 to 1968,so they were never teammates.

In my opinion, the religious backup QB is based on Craig Morton.

Decades ago, I actually checked to see who the backup QB was for Dallas when Peter Gent played, and it was Craig Morton. (He went on to be the starting QB for the Denver Broncos.)

reply

Craig Morton also started for Dallas. He was their QB in Super Bowl V when they lost to the Colts. As for who was who, my guess Svenson's character might have been Bob Lilly who was as redneck as they came. Matuzack was probably George Andrie.

reply

Craig Morton was a very open born again christian but was also know to hit the town and drink a beer or 12 so any direct comparison is loosely based I"m sure.
