For all the talk of Sybylla's Ugliness/Plainness...


...I thought she looked positively cherubic in the opening scene. And when her hair was wet. She was charming all around, imo.
Great movie.

I've got an appetite for destruction but I scrape the plate.

I don't get where she and everyone thought she was ugly.
The only thing ugly about her was that wild, frizzy hair.

Judy Davis has always been quite easy on the eyes. I think she was just perceived as ugly because of her manners and precociousness. That she refused to do what was expected of her. She kind of reveled in the idea that she was ugly when in fact we all know she was anything but. Everyone around her made such a show of not being ugly in any way that Sybylla sees something attractive in being her family's version of ugly.
