Where are the Holmesian canny deductions?

I understand that this was not penned by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and that it is a work of historical fiction that questions how the literary character, Sherlock Holmes, might solve the very real Jack the Ripper case. However, except for Holmes' inference that "Juwes" was not an illiterate person's attempt at an anti-semitic slur but an allusion to Masonic legend, there was none of that sharp observation and detection skills.
