Rape scene

I wonder how Trippers attempted rape of Roxanne would fair in today's family movies.

That's one of my favourite scenes, but I think I don't think Tripper would still be considered the goofy good guy if that happened today in a movie.

My god, just stop. It's bad enough you can't look at anyone without offending them one way or the other these days. Don't ruin a 37 year old film with todays PC bull s h i t. It was funny.

reply

Who ever would've thought that scene could ever be considered rape. This isn't the first poster to ever say that either.

Things aren't that PC.

Yeah, they really are.

I just watched this movie for the first time and it is 10 years older than me. I would say calling it rape is a harsh description but it wasn't funny and was awkward to watch. Maybe she's just bad at acting as it didn't come across as playing her saying "NO STOP" dozens of times and her serious face made the scene very awkward. In real life she could sue the camp for everything it's worth, he would certainly be fired and could even be charged with assault.

On the other thread people justified it by saying "they've worked together for 3 summers" it doesn't matter if you've known the girl your entire life and are dating her when a woman(or man) shouts "stop stop STOP" you have to stop and back away or risk facing sexual assault charges. "I was just playing" wouldn't hold up in court either.

FYI, I said attempted rape.
If Morty hadn't walked in, and tripper succeeded in his endeavours... Rape.

Agreed!!! Yet whsb or cans out and I saw it then, I thought it was just flirting and that they had chemistry --she seemed to dig him. But last night when I watched it , after not seeing it for many years, I thought wow!! So hard to watch; she was serious and said no. The movie times have changed. This would not fare well today...also, "little Darlings" and "sooner later"-2 great movies from back then , but awkward to watch certain scenes today.

The scene was very funny. Not hard to watch at all.

Do the ladies here find that scene hard to watch? Him pinning her down and her clearly saying no? I know some of the fellows think nothing of it. clearly, her answer was a big resounding no.

reply

She never told him "no I will not touch your penis at this time"

That scene always had me frowning and scratching my head. I couldn't get the whole notion of him "humorously" forcing himself on her all the while she's resisting.

The character Bill Murry plays in a lot of films is the guy who tries to act likeable but is a real scum bag underneath. This is one of those instances, and Murry knows that character all too well.

I don't know, I think most of us took the whole scene in vain of the whole movie and don't even think he was going to continue doing anything inappropriate if she didn't like it. He was inappropriate, he was awkward, he had juvenile social skills that included immaturity, but a criminal NO.

His character would have stopped and let her make the next move, kind of like how they got together in the end. Remember that? "I've only had pets before."

Of course Morty walked in so we can only assume this, but based on the rest of the story we (most of us) are not calling his character a rapist.

. Ephemeron.

Yeah, you know, that's how I initially "gut reaction like" saw it, but then I wondered who on Earth would really do that? And that's when I started to frown.

I don't know ... maybe I'm too much of a gentleman or something to really get that kind of thing.

I grew up with a few guys like him (not friends, just other dudes at school that you'd see around), and it always baffled me as to how they got through life with no social skills where women were concerned.

In fact it used to piss me off. Oh well. It's just a movie.

EDIT; when you start manhandling someone, that's criminal.

Throwing her over his knees like he's going to spank her then lying on top of her when she's giving him a pretty forceful and serious no came off as creepy to me.

Yeah, it's a comedy and all that, but Tripper is depicted as the good guy. The rest of the movie he does act like a goofy, funny, decent dude.

I don't have a problem with raunchy humor or spicy stuff in movies, games and so on, but it's probably not a bad thing that stuff like that and guys spying on women when they are in the show or changing are not depicted like harmless fun.
