I just saw Manhattan for the first time today.

I am amazed how this film stands the test of time. The issues the characters are dealing with are very similar to what we deal with today.

Things like divorce, custody disputes, infidelity, work and unemployment are issues that matter a lot to this day. The way they dealt with those issues felt very true as well. Some were classy, while others messed up. In little things like the awkward theater scene, the characters said a lot without speaking.

Even 40 years later, Manhattan doesn’t feel dated. And this is coming from a guy born many years after it was released.

I knew you were a man before you signed off as a "a guy."
This film feels very dated indeed - the main storyline about an ugly old creep dating a beautiful high school girl, and no-one blinking an eye, tells you loud and clear this isn't 2019.
Also, as a woman, the women in this film are not relatable at all, and probably weren't 40 years ago either as they were clearly all written by a man who knows sweet FA about women. :)

Yet, I know plenty of women that act like the women in this film. The good and the bad. Maybe that’s what makes the film so good. It illustrates the reality of people, even the parts we prefer not to believe are true. :)
