Is this Movie better than Apocalypse Now?

I adore this movie, but it won against Apocalypse Now in the Academy Awards or whatnot in '79. I don't really care that the awards are politically influenced by the Illuminati or some crackpot sh!t, I just want your honest opinions on which of the extremely different movies is better. Also, do you think that if Coppola hadn't made the Godfathers before he made AP, that he might've won the awards? Thoughts.

Manhattan and Apocalypse Now are pretty much as different as two movies can get. I don't really see any grounds for comparison, particularly, as TheWraith points out, because Manhattan wasn't nominated for best picture.

If you want an honest answer, though, as a psychedelic war film I prefer Apocalypse Now. As a romantic comedy, Manhattan is superior.

I wouldn´t probably include Manhattan even in the top 20 of 1979 (the same applies to the Award winning Kramer vs Kramer). Apocalypse Now is sublime and, as far as I´m concerned, the best movie of a very strong year.

Sounds a bit like rubbing it in, but hey - you asked.

Kramer vs. Kramer won the Oscar in 1979, not Manhattan. Both Manhattan and Apocalypse Now are great movies and the two best films from '79 that I've seen. Still, I'd take Manhattan.

Love them both. I prefer Manhattan.

i did not know that this film beat Apocalypse Now (which is on my short list for greatest films ever made).

I'm not sure ANY Woody Movie is better than Apocalypse Now, and Manhattan is not one of his best.... so... you know what i think.

That's because it didn't, the OP is mistaken, Manhattan was not nominated for best picture.

Correct... just looked it up. Kramer vs Kramer beat out Apocalypse Now (which is an equal travesty to Manhattan beating it).

Manhattan was nominated only for Best Screenplay and best supporting actress (Mariel Hemingway), winning neither.

I personally prefer Manhattan.

Apocalypse Now is overrated.
