Anyone think this is Allen's greatest performance?

I remember being surprised about Woody Allen's Best Actor nomination for Annie Hall. He didn't really show a whole lot of emotional range in that, and he was kind of playing himself. Although similar, his performance in Manhattan was incredible.

It was so nuanced, and complex. I was actually surprised Allen was capable of it. I always thought this was the film Woody Allen should have been nominated for. Anyone else agree?

There were some excellent witty lines in this film and his character was also more center stage. I prefer Annie Hall to Manhattan as a film; but I think Allen did give a better performance here. It was also more dramatic, especially in the last half hour. I suppose that is why I like Annie Hall better, because I find it more consistently amusing.

There are many crack up scenes in Annie Hall. Especially when he sneezes all over the expensive coke stash and sends it flying everywhere, and gets arrested in LA and boldly claims how he has an issue with authority figures. Also when he is trying to be amorous with Annie, but she leaves her body because she is stoned and she becomes detached and distant from him, so he can't make love to her. 😄

I prefer Manhattan to Annie Hall. For me it's Woody Allen's masterpiece. Perfect in every way.

Annie Hall seems like a later version of Manhattan.

But it has sentimental value for me. I was going through a bad time, and I watched Manhattan any number of times, it took me to another better place. Kind of like Mia Farrow in Purple Rose of Cairo watching Astaire and Rogers.
