Daniel is really unlikeable

I didn't believe for a second that a girl like Lauren would have any interest in Daniel. She was beautiful and mature beyond her years. I could see her liking a much older, handsome boy (and they would have noticed her, too). When I was 13-14 all the girls liked boys who were 17-18. No one could stand the little pipsqueaks in our own age group. Also, they were usually shorter than us at that age. Boys mature more slowly.

Daniel was rude, sullen, arrogant, pushy, obnoxious, lacking in charm, no sense of humor and not remotely cute. Plus, the guy playing him was a terrible actor. This movie would have been so much better with an actor who had chemistry with Diane Lane.

That said, I am in love with Diane Lane in this movie! She's perfection.

I agree that socially, most boys mature more slowly than girls. When you were 13-14, you and your friends may have liked "older men," but what 17-18 year-old guy wants to hang around with a 13-14 year-old girl? Besides, most, if not all, states have statutes that prohibit 18 year-olds from becoming "too close for comfort" with teens younger than 18.

IMO your description of Daniel sounds like many tweens and his behavior seemed pretty natural for a boy his age. Thankfully, most teens outgrow these behaviors as they grow into adulthood.

Some movies are released; others sneak out.

Are you sure you saw the this movie? Even my husband, who has been in love with Diane Lane since this movie first came out, thinks Daniel has none of the attributes that you listed.

Seriously, the OP doesn't seem to have a clue as to what the character was like. It sounds like open jealousy.

Daniel was in fact quite all of those things... watch the movie again and watch how he treats Lauren throughout the film when he's not spouting lines from movies... he has no voice of his own, and he is very rude to her and others.
