I was not aware that there were two versions. I simply owned the American one. Anyway, based on the version I owned, it seemed that they just wanted to lose all the WWII references and so there's no mention of it, or even why they're staying with the professor. In this version they're just they're just American kids randomly living with an old man, LOL.

This version dos`nt emphisise the WWII background and just has it as four kids staying in an old country house owned by a professor which could be in the US, UK or anywhere. The way that they are drawn looks more 1970`s than 1940s as well.
