I have seen this cartoon before, but it had different voices, including June Whitfield, Arthur Lowe, Leslie Phillips and Sheila Hancock. This "British" version is also being shown on ITV over the Easter holidays. Does anyone have a full cast list for this version?

shareDisaster! All I can say is, I'm glad I didn't pay £40 on Ebay for a Video with the terrible, lifeless, American voices. The reviews in Radio Times this week says, "The drawings seem too elementary for the subject, but voice-overs from the likes of June Whitfield and Arthur Lowe give life to a classic story." They certainly did, but not today. :-(

I taped it years ago, and the odd thing is that just before the first(?) adverts, the sound started to go wrong, then after the adverts the voices had changed to the American ones (Arthur Lowe's wonderful tones swapped to Italian gangster with speech impediment for the beaver)!
Perhaps they messed up the original soundtrack? I'll have to dig out the copy I've got.
I've just left feedback on www.itv.com because I'd love to know what happened. I guess if other people do the same they might take a bit more notice than just little old me :o)

I also have a taped version where the voices change from English to American and then back again. I was so excited that it was on TV Good Friday but then when I started watching it and the voices were the American ones it really ruined it for me. Is this available to buy on video or DVD with the English voices?

I agree that the British version is a lot better. I loved this film when I was a wee lad. It is one of the reasons why I became a animator. The animation isn't that great but it still has a lovely magical feel about it. And the music is top notch.
The British voiced version is infinitely better than the emotionless "I'm reading from a script I've only just seen" US version, having seen the latter just today.
Unfortunately, though I have the British version on tape (recorded 19/4/1981), I don't have a cast list, since the titles were not updated to reflect the British cast on the version I have.
Our version does have British voices all the way through, though.
[Almost had a disaster with the tape - the end leader strip snapped! (Well, it *is* an old tape). Luckily, it wasn't the tape itself, and I was able to fit it back into the spool, with no apparent harm done. Thank goodness!]
My daughter would love this version with the engilish actors as it is the only version she really liked. She can in half way though it and has been searching for years for this version. When I went on ITV to search for it it came up no results. which is odd as it was on today.

Yeah I have the british version which I have transfered onto DVD, It's something I watch on a regular basis and is far more superior to the cheesy american voice version. A timeless classic to enjoy over and over again thanks to the magic of DVD. . .
shareThat's one thing I've noticed about a lot of US children's cartoon programmes. The majority of them seem to be redubbed with a British voice cast.

I had NO idea until tonight that there were two different voice version.
I always thought it was odd that the boys had accents, but the girls didn't.
I'm curious to know now if what I've been watching is the American version... which would be a shame in a way, because as much as I thought the children sounded very 'bland' I LOVED the voice of the Witch and the beavers.
I'd love to hear a sample of the British version.
