I don't remember this being around in the 70s at all, but obviously it was. Then again, I was a teenager when this movie came out, long past birthday parties.

We had them back then, usually something like candy and a few superballs, squirtguns or a stash of army men. You could kind of a gage how "cool" a kid was if they gave out a decent bag at the end.

Yes, Ted was working and had no choice. What you have said, is like shades of Joanna, who didn't seem to appreciate what Ted was doing either. However, Billy was just a kid and for him, he would have felt he was missing out and even embarrassed, because it was the mothers that were picking up the other kids and his wasn't around. Ted making a living, would have been far away from his mind. It was understandable how Billy felt and I think Ted would have understood this. I don't think he would have wanted to blow up at Billy over this and may have felt more annoyance at himself, because he couldn't get away earlier.

shareGoody bags have been a thing for a long time, but the contents have improved. Back then they were filled with junk candy and cheap toys (lollipops, tootsie rolls, puzzle game or bubbles.). Also this kid lives in a wealthy neighborhood in NYC where people try to impress each other and out do each other’s parties.
