Anyone know what the name/artist of the song is that plays on the radio in the cabin during his birthday? It's described as 'lawrence welk' like, but I don't think it is Lawrence Welk. Jack Elliott is credited as soundtrack conductor, but I don't see any credited songs to him on IMDB.
The general consensus I've seen in various web discussions is, that music piece is something by Mantovani. No ID on which song though. It might be in the music credits at the end of the film.
Steve Martin at the beginning of his comedy album, "Let's Get Small" has a bit about being born a poor black child, then he heard his first Mantovani record and decided to become white.
Alas, he seems to have been a very prolific composer/conductor. I listened to about 50 tracks of his via iTunes but didn't come across one that matched the movie.
Check out a song called "Crazy Rhythm," recorded by the Roger Wolfe Kahn Orchestra. It sounds very similar. I think a new arrangement is used in the movie, but the melody is very similar.
