I take issue with the synopsis of this movie

Here on the IMDb, they describe this movie thusly:

"Navin is an idiot. He grew up in Mississippi as adopted son of a black family but on his 18th birthday he feels he wants to discover the rest of the world and sets out to St. Louis."

This is incorrect. Navin is never described as the "adopted son of a black family." He says he was born a poor black child. I have always viewed this film on the assumption that he was black. It may seem silly, but I always loved the fact that he was described as black, and yet didn't look black.

There was no adoption. Navin is black.
