This is a classic comedy imo and very underrated on this site.
How it has a 6.9 on this site ill never know.
If you need a godo laugh go and rent this, its just as good today as it was when it first came out.
This and Trains,Planes and Automobiles are my fav Steve Martin movies (Ohh yeah and Roxxanee). Man With Two Brains was funny to, but imo THE JERK is just sooo classic.

I think a lot of Martin's early films are underrated on here. The Jerk, LA Story, Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, Roxanne, The Man With Two Brains and Three Amigo's all score less than 7.

Have to disagree. I'm a Steve Martin fan -- and not a kid -- but just re-watched this on cable and was surprised how few big laughs I got from it. Not nearly as funny as current SMART comedies from Apatow and his circle: Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Knocked Up, etc. I laughed A LOT at those.

This movie is the epitome of Steve Martin's sense of humor. I think a lot of people don't get his humor. This movie is a part of the comedy culture of the likes of Mel Brooks, David Zucker, Eddie Murphy, Dan Akryod,Bill Murray, etc. I think a lot of comedies from the 70s and 80s have that same tone; the whole dry, goof ball type of comedies. I wouldn't consider it low brow, but it'll make you laugh out loud. It's one of the greatest comedies, in my opinon, and should be given a nod as an important film period.
I agree. This movie deserves a much higher rating. It's a total riot from start to finish. 8 out of 10 from me.

I don't pay much attention to IMDB ratings, as they can be very deceiving, but The Jerk is rated as one of the funniest movies of all time on many lists. I believe it was #20 on Bravo's list and #89 on AFI's.

As far as IMDb rating goes I think this movie deserves at least 8/10. So it's underrated. But from a critics point of view I'd disagree. The Jerk has been selected as one of the best comedies of all time. So that is why I think it is not underrated.
Overrated by quite a bit to my judgement. I rate it 4.8 out of 10 which rounds off to 5.
