Rated R?

How come this movie is rated R? It wasn't that bad when I saw it on TV. I thought it was PG at first.

May be it's got something to do with Navin's special purpose in life.🐭

When The Jerk was theatrically released in 1979, the PG-13 rating, (a more suitable rating for this movie in my view) was not yet available by the MPAA. The Jerk is a little too strong for PG, (i.e the sexual situations with Patti, the name of Navin's dog used a few other times in the movie, and some mild drug use by the customers in the car at the gas station.) where as anyone can see the movie, so the MPAA gave it a light "R."

Today, this movie would be rated PG-13 most likely.

This was the first "R" rated film my parents let me see back in 1979. I was thirteen.

Swamp Thing which came out 3 years after this and showed both of a woman's boobs and got a PG rating. Airplane had a guy snort cocaine and showed a guy poop into an airvent and still got a PG rating.

Green Goblin is great! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1L4ZuaVvaw

It had nudity in paintings, which probably counted as legit nudity.
