Scene cut after the original release... why?

When the movie was first out in theaters, there was another charity seeker. I can't remember if it was before or after "cat juggling," but it was some guy begging for funds to refurbish his private jet. It was a huge laugh to see him burst into tears when he admitted "the leather upholstery so cracked from dry rot that [he] was ashamed to fly [his] friends to the Super Bowl." After hearing this, Navin bursts into tears himself as he starts to write a check.

Does anyone know why this scene was deleted? It was a good chuckle with no political improprieties. I'd always thought it might have been to make it fit on VHS, but it wasn't on the DVD version either. Sometimes that scene is included when the show is televised though. Theories?

Click on "alternate versions" under the "Fun Stuff" tap on the left side of the main page. You'll find your answers there.

They cut another scene when he sits on the entry to the spinning ride at the carnival talking to the other carnies, "I went through every emotion up there, from ?????? hunger...etc...and none of the guys could come up with an emotion...great scene lost on most dvds

Another deleted scene is when owner of the gas station told him he would pay him $1.10 to work for him. Navin then says "you will pay me $1.10 to work for you for one hour?" or something to that effect. Does anyone remember that also?

reply

Yeah, i remember the "$1.10 for one hour?" and Tilt-a-Whirl scenes from the one time I caught the butchered network-TV version - dunno why they weren't included as DVD bonus features.

That scene with the spinning ride is from a TV version, but wasn't included in the original theatrical release.

And now for something completely different...

I have all the alternate scenes from a TBS broadcast in '94.
As soon as I get my VCR hooked up, I'll get them online here.

I actually think they're some of the funniest parts of the movie-

Runtime. Comedies do not go two hours. Or at least, they didn't in the '70s. I think Quentin Tarantino and Peter Jackson are making "King Komedy", which will run 8-and-a-half hours.

But seriously, the last thing a comedy wants to do is wear out its welcome.

I go to the movies more than you.

These scenes were NOT included in the Theatrical release. I was there opening day, and several different screenings after, at other theaters. Only the "Cat Juggling" scene was in the Theatrical version.
