Don't see it, it's a made for TV movie. Steve Martin is listed as an executive producer - that means Universal came to him wanting to do a sequel, and he got paid to allow them to go ahead and do it with characters he created.
Check out "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles", "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels", or "The Three Amigos". The first of the three afforemntioned might be one of the funniest flicks ever. The F-word montage alone makes it worth viewing. And, although Steve has chosen to do more commercially plausible films in the past several years, he is still able to make movies like "Cheaper by the Dozen" at least watchable.

yha, I've seen them. I thought "Three Amigos" totally sucked. He played the straight guy in "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles", so he wasn't really the person who was making the jokes as much as the guy who was the butt of the jokes.
"Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" was very good - much better than I thought it would be. Both him and Michael Caine put in excellent performances. "Bowfinger" was also a decent movie, and again it was much better than I thought it would be.
But still, both of those movies don't even come close to "The Jerk" ! Like I said, he has made some funny movies since that, but they don't even belong in the same league. These days, he's more likely to make a bunch of stupid "family" soft comedy cheezeball movies like "Father of the Bride" (1 & 2), "Bringing Down The House" (where he again was the butt of all the really bad jokes from Queen Latifah), or "Sgt. Bilko" (which apparently didn't have any jokes).
The man has much more talent than he has been showing for the past 15 years. The only movie I believe which fully tapped into his talent was "The Jerk".

I vaguely remember that one. Isn't that the one where there's a brain that talks to him? By the way I really like him in A Simple twist of fate. It's actually one of my favorite Steve Martin Movies. Very underrated.
Kelloway: Doyle, get in the car. Doyle: But I ordered Onion Rings. Kelloway: Doyle!
IMO Martin lost his edge when he stopped working with Carl Reiner. He made some good one afterwards (PARENTHOOD, ROXANNE, PLANE, TRAINS & AUTOMOBILES, BOWFINGER) but none at the level of what he and Reiner did together.
i've seen planes tranes and amobiles.. indeed, a HILARIOUS movie.. yes, mr skandl is right, the fword "montage" is definetly the best part. i rewound it over 30 times..
On the other hand, most people I knew at the time, myself included, thought they both sucked. Martin definitely put out a string of stinkers, but his newer movies seem to have made a major improvement. The guy is so hilarious, it's too bad the movies were so sappy. Even parts of The Jerk were kind of lame, but the rest of the movie was so good, it was saved. I think a lot of times the movies were brought down by other people... like Bernadette Peters and Lily Tomlin--both of whom are great, but IMO, one buzz killer is trying to incorporate musical numbers into a movie that was doing just fine without them to begin with. Although Bernadette Peters playing the trumpet was pretty funny.
With all these mentions of Steve's old movies I can't believe no one has brought up Parenthood. It's brilliant! Both serious and heartfelt at times as well as funny. I appreciate it even more now that I'm a parent myself.
Number one, the character Steve played in this movie was named Navin, not Nathan. Number two, if you don't think Martin has been in anything better than this, you need to check out ROXANNE, ALL OF ME, THE MAN WITH TWO BRAINS, GRAND CANYON, and LEAP OF FAITH among others. ROXANNE especially...he is nothing short of brilliant in that film.

i've seen them all & none of them come close to The Jerk.
He recently wrote and starred in (and I think directed) a movie called "Shopgirl". It's not comedy like "The Jerk" (in fact, I think it falls squarely into drama), but it's still quite good.
I really liked "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" (one of the best movies ever - what a story!) and "All of Me" (funny and sweet). "Father of the Bride" was pretty darned good, too.
I like many Steve Martin movies more than The Jerk. You're entitled to your opinion YourDarkStar, but it's just that, an opinion. I think he was at his best with All of Me, L.A. Story, and, yes, Dirty Scoundrels, Plains, Trains..., Roxanne; and he was good too in Father of the Bride and Bowfinger. And then, aside from comedy, I liked Leap of Faith and Shopgirl.
Leap of Faith? I thought that movie would have been hilarious but it turned out so depressing. Everytime I see a Steve Martin movie i geet so depressed because I keep thinking it will be like "The Jerk" (funny) "Plains, Trains..." was OK though, but nothing like "the Jerk"
I could be quite wrong about my observation but it seems an exceptional artist or entertainer or what have you is at his or her peak with a generation or two or three and then a connection is lost due to age and the changing times. I could be wrong. Or I could be right....or somewhere there in the middle ground.
