no it doesn't hold up. not even a 3/10 if you have to honestly rate it now.
you confuse nostalgia with a good movie.
Yes, it still holds up. I love this movie. It's one of the very few movies I actually own.
shareall my life i avoided this because when i was a kid i got the impression it was just the dorkiest movie with a dull cover, in recent years i've watched it and was amazed how much fun it is, i come back to the phonebook bit, how excited he gets to see his name in print, and after that someone starts attempting to kill him, finding his name run of the mill average... "wow these cans" part is even funny because of his naivety, speaking of naive, those crooks look really innocent, the owner of that place reminds of rodney dangerfield, perhaps that's why they casted him in sort of rodney's part in the sequel to caddyshack, when the guy at the bank says he'll need two forms of identification, and martin hands out his driving licence and application for becoming an astronaut. his childishness mixed with country upbringing makes the contrasts so great, you hear some words totally unacceptable today, then martin shouts out "sir, you are talking to a..." well i can't really repeat the word then of course, like the movie "see no evil hear no evil" where pryor was blind growing up thinking he was a honky, apparently there are two different songs titled "you belong to me", the one they sing on this beach and i equally love the jerry lee lewis country ballad, the name of the dog is really surprising since this movie otherwise seem to have a language acceptable to air on tv, usually when you say the animal in the movie did the best job it's to diss a movie, but really one of the funniest bits in this is the look of reaction from the dog as martin acts like a complete boob.

woke up grey cold honky town,
through fog steam arabian sun,
rode in on a camel jumped on a pickup truck,
jet fuel rocket me to another atmosphere,
fry in desert crave your heat all day.
