Navin R. Johnson v. Forrest Gump

Seriously. Two goodhearted simpletons from the Deep South raised under unique family situations. Both leave home on a journey from rags to riches; each has multiple adventures, each eventually returns home to family. Both get checks for money that they don’t understand. Both love women who leave them and don’t come back into their lives until after they hit the mother load.

The difference between the movies is obvious but there’s a remarkable similarity between the characters.

One is underrated while the other is pretty overrated.

reply

Yeah this one is way overrated. Not to mention the jokes are so flat it hurts.

This MUST an inspiration for Forrest Gump.

reply

Navin, by God. Forrest Gump wasn't as funny a character as the situations he got himself into. NAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAVIN.

Those are interesting observations.

Haha. Yeah. Just watched it again and was thinking about Gump for those same reasons. I was also comparing to Elf.

Guy is finally told he is adopted and leaves the only home he's ever known, one where he's incredibly out of place, for an adventure in the big city. Culture shock leads to comedic situations. Unassuming young lady inexplicably falls for him...also, both stories are being told to the camera by one of the characters.

Mother load? It's mother LODE!
