You gotta have the whole thing to appreciate the quote on the front page...

Ramon (Luis Avalos) comes into the squad room, yelling a stream of Spanish invectives...

Ramon: yadda yaddda yadda District Attorney!

Ernie (Dom DeLuise): Another triumph, huh?

Ramon: The DA threw out the case without even going to court! (flipping through report) I had it all: reports, stolen goods inventories, witness statements! I had it all! I HAD IT ALL!

(pause)

Doug (Jerry Reed): How 'bout a donut?

Ramon: Justice! I want justice!

Doug: (holding up a bill) I'm buyin'.

Ramon: (taking the bill): I'll take the donut. (to Ernie) You wanna donut?

Ernie, holding out hand: I'd rather have the money.

Other good quotes:

After Louise (Suzanne Pleshette) bumps into Ernie and Doug, nearly foiling their bust of a couple of guitar theives...

You know, I gotta hand it to you guys. I mean, you're real heroes -- busting two guys armed with a forty-five caliber guitar!

Doug explains his great new plan to Capt Guyberger (Ossie Davis) and the rest:

Look, we take over Hymie Stiglitz's pawnshop. The crooks come to us!

Capt: You want us to buy stolen goods?

Ernie: Why don't we get into rape? Rape is good, rape is very good -- Ramon can get laid, it'll clear up his complexion! Doug, it's a very stupid idea!

Doug: Why?

Ernie: Because...(pause)...if it was worth doing, somebody else would have done it already.

(after a couple more minutes in this vein, even Louise gets in on it)

What you would have is something that's never been done before...no plea bargaining, guaranteed to cut through the bureaucratic *beep* I mean, when these guys incriminate themselves on Instant Replay they would have to be adjudicated with substantial penalties...

Capt: RRRRRRIGHT!

How could I forget...the scene near the end, where the cops are giving the party (in order to get the "customers" in one place so they can bust them all at once) and they have Capt. Guyberger playing the Godfather!

Floozy: A black Godfather?!?

Doug (coming up off the cuff): Uh, he was a war baby! See, when Mussolini invaded Ethiopia... (Louise gives him the hook before he really gets into it.)

My favorite: The big shoot-out at the condominium project. As Ernie (Dom Deluise) is being fired on by the bad guys with machine guns, he jumps behind a stash of 55 gallon drums to hide from the fusillade. The bullets penetrate the drums and fluid leaks out. Ernie takes a sniff.

"Gasoline?"

Realizing the danger of his supposedly safe hiding place, he starts running, and jumps into Biscayne Bay (filmed in Miami, you know) screaming:

"I'M HIDING BEHIND GASOLIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINE!!!"

The resulting explosion is pretty cheesy, but the whole shot is gut-wrenchingly funny.

That's a great scene. I love the bit when Alfie Wise is about to get the drop on Doug (Jerry Reed) right next to the porto-potty, when Louise (Suzanne Pleshette) knocks him into it and handcuffs the door locked. Then when Doug and Louise laugh about it and walk off...

Construction worker in the next porto-potty: Hey, d'ya mind? I'm trying to go to the bathroom here!

Louise: Ahh, go s**t in your hard-hat!

This movie has lots of sly comedy like that. I still don't understand why it hasn't gotten a DVD release yet. Going back to explosions...

Carmen ("That's Carmine!") the gangster has blown up Doug's Trans-Am. The rest of the cast stands over the charred, smoldering remains, and remark that "It's wrecked! It's ruined!"

All poor Doug can say (even though he still has 52 more payments on this car): "I just had it washed..."

This movie is so big that "elephants could mate here" or you could have "junior league Jai-alai" in it, but still no DVD. :(

The first scene in the pawnshop: the petty thief named Irving comes in...

Irving (not seeing Hymie asleep in a chair): Hymie???

Hymie (startled awake): I'M A LEGITIMATE BUSINESSM-- Oh, it's you, Irving.

(Irving lays the manual typewriter on the counter).

Hymie: Runs on steam?

Irving: It's an antique. The Magna Carta was typed on it.

Hymie: Put an ad in the paper.

Jerry Reed to the little lady, after finding a large handgun on her person, at the party: Paraphrased: "Ma'am? Leave your hog-leg here."

Cigar Man to Ramon (making fun of the height difference between the two: "Tomorrow at Noon, you may climb me." Also his ad-libbing with the oranges prior to that line.

The pot lady trying to sell it at the pawn shop, with a highly regal accent: "Pot, it's the best s**t you'll ever smoke."

Impressive. Most Impressive.

There were several good quotes, often subtle background jokes that are hard to hear. One of my favs is after the fight at the end when all the crooks are being led away, as one covered in food walks by him, Dom Deluise tells him... "Oh man! You got the beet s**t outta ya!"

My favorite quote from this movie has always been:

Doug: You know what burns my ass?

Ernie: What?

Doug: [Hand held at hip length] A flame this high.

(Or something to that affect. I would love to see this again, why isn't it on DVD yet?)
