6.4... what are you people smoking?

This is one of the best romantic comedies (if not the best) I've ever seen: the perfect blend of subtle humor and relationships; the three-dimensional characters (especially John Heard in the lead) and witty dialogue should only make this a classic. You won't find any cheated moments in this film (and I'm referring to the non-happy ending version here, haven't seen the other one.)

And put this out on DVD while you're at it.

I totally agree with you, this movie is a total
alignment of everything that can go right in a
movie, and is one of my all time favorites. I
gave it a 10, and would have given it a 100 if
I could have! ;-)

I have to agree. I had not seen this movie in a long long time. I was
pleaseantly surprised to see how real the relationships are. When
the two main characters meet, it is so interesting. It reminded me of a
Woody Allen movie but better. No gags just a slice of real life.

I saw this with the non-Hollywood, realistc ending, and loved it.

I want to point out the fabulous performance by Gloria Graeme, her last. Her first (or at least one of her first) was as the slightly "bad" girl in "It's a Wonderful Life."

reply

I am so glad someone else noticed Gloria Grahame ... I had never known who she was, but she was perfect in that mother role, and I just saw her tonight in a 1950 movie "In A Lonely Place" and I thought she was just so good in that role, the movie was a classic - albeit dark - I loved it, and I am in love with her ... it is a shame she has passed on. Wonderful actress.

I totally agree with you. I look every month for this on Amazon, et al, and never see this. Will this EVER be a dvd?

I feel certain that the ratings on IMDB are all based on the politics of the people running this site. If you read how they they get their ratings, it is based on a mysterious formula, and has nothing to do with how we the people vote.

I, too, gave this magnificent film a 10, and hope to see more like it. It was a taste of real life, and I needed it.

No matter where you go, there you are!

reply

i agree that the rating seems a little off. i'm not sure how they handle the ratings since it's currently at 6.8, with an arithmatic average of 7.8 and a mean of 8.

anyway, consider me one of the converted. 19 years after the movie was released one new fan is added. i stumbled upon this movie on encore's indieplex channel after a long day of work on an usually rainy day for a january day in the midwest. the mood of the film fit the day perfectly. the story was great, the characters sympathetic, and the realistic ending was fabulous. honestly, i'm surprised i never heard of this film before.

Yes, this film is perfect to watch on a cold, snowy day. Also, the idea of the long winter--the coldness symbolic of Laura's rejection of Charles.

I'll vote on it now and give it a 10. It's much more than a romantic comedy--and I think it's an interesting twist really showing the man fall so hard and become so obsessed with a woman when the romcom story is usually the other way around.

And when I'm sittin' real close to the wide, wide screen, I feel like it's happening to me

reply

This is definitly a winter, stuck inside movie.

It definitely feels like chilly, much like the (original) title. Why did they change it to "Head Over Heels" anyway? 9/10 from me.
