what happens

I have not seen this movie for a long time. Does George c Scoot find his daughter and bring her back from the pornographic life?

reply

Yes. But what I want to know is...did 8mm w/ Nick Cage copy this movie?

reply

No. The girl WAS murdered. Nicolas Cage avenges her murder.

reply

I consider 8mm to be a far superior version of this movie... Sorry Paul Schrader but when it comes to directing, you blow.

What, You dont like Joel Schumacher?

Yes.. he finds her and brings her home but, interestingly, it WASN'T the ending that Schrader had in mind. In his original concept, Ven Dorn goes to L.A. to find her and discovers that she has been killed in a car accident.. then goes home. It was only under heavy-duty studio pressure that he changed to the "happy" ending we all see in the movie. He regrets buckling under that pressure to this day! I have thought about this over and over and have mixed feelings as I thought it may have obviously been a more realistic ending, as Schrader states, but perhaps somewhat of a downer.. I'm still dealing with THAT one.

The original 'downer' ending would have been perfect; it would've been so very '70s, yeah?

"What, You dont like Joel Schumacher?"

I don't like him either. So there.

I don't think the existing ending is as happy as people seem to think. Just because Jake gets his daughter back doesn't mean they'll suddenly start living a perfect life. Granted, it's not as nihilistic as Schrader's original concept, but in a way it could prove more tragic if the story were to continue logically. After all he went through to get her back Jake may still end up losing her again anyway given that she probably won't be able to just get over her experiences and go home and move on.
