Oliver - the Musical
I hear an unmistakable similarity between the score of Oliver the Musical film version, and this film.
Question: Did Jerry Goldsmith source the Oliver score by Johnny Green and whoever else for this picture? Maybe the producer or director told Jerry to write something like 'Oliver' - which represents the London in the film viewing public's eye. So he did. The similarity is too coincidental. No disrepect to Mr. Goldsmith, because he is a great film composer and the score to this film is fantastic, but I think he gave a good hard listen to Green's work, and did some handy borrowing. Not plagiarism, but a very good nod in the direction of 'Oliver'. Listen for yourself. Remember, Oliver came first.
I would like to know the real story of how this score was composed. I bet a musician like Goldsmith could listen to 'Oliver' once and have it locked away in his memory for potential use for a project. Nothing is new under the sun. Which begs the question of where the score from Oliver came from? Who'd they borrow from?
