Not sure why he's regarded as heroic by the public.

After all, they weren't robbing the bank execs, they were robbing soldiers fighting in the Crimea. It was their payroll that was stolen.

The soldiers would have gotten paid anyway, and did, eventually. They were heroes because they pulled it off. Sort of like Bonnie and Clyde or Dillenger, but they killed a lot fewer people.

Because Sean Connery was playing him. And he had great presence and charisma.
