Agreed. This is a brilliant score. Heavily influenced by Prokofiev - Romeo and Julliet, also Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, definitely Ravel and Debussy. There's another section that reminds me of something, but I can't place it yet. Possibly Bartok. Goldsmith gets around.
Just got it while driving. It's obvious. Leonard Bernstein's Overture to Candide. 100%. Goldsmith has written a classic overture with all the bells and whistles. I love the way the score opens right off the top and the overture opens with a pop. As it was said before, it sets the mood right from the beginning - cheeky, irreverent. Great brass writting. Great orchestra. I love the way the trumpet player plays that minor sixth interval without changing the valves, just changes lip pressure and lips it up. Very stylish. Perfect!
He's very clever and efficient with his material - from the old school where they know their craft inside and out.
