I think MGM is going to release special edition dvd on this movie :P any idea to them for this new dvd ? Digital remastered picture and restored sound? New Enhanced Widescreen for tvs? Interview with Mickey Rooney , director Carroll Ballard maybe excutive producer Francis Coppola? some never before seen footage? Deleted Scenes? Some good stuffz of the sound editing? A comentary track with Director,Cinematography Caleb Deschanel and Carroll Ballard ? lol
The regular dvd is going to out of stock. That mean they are going to release the SE edition. MGM home entertainment will release the SE edition dvd for fans. The second reason is the old dvd is not in widescreen. the old dvd was released in many years ago b4 the Widescreen Tv hasn't come out yet. So It's time to improve something isn't very good in the old dvd. and the old dvd do not have any extra features of the film.so i 'm sure they are going to release a new edition dvd within the year.
What's your source? For you to say "I'm sure they are going to realease a new edition dvd within the year" doesn't mean squat! I'm sure space aliens are going to invade the Earth also but unless I have a source, it doesn't mean jack!
Ok guys. If you're going to write info on here as if you know what you are talking about...
1) Get your facts straight. The first edition of the DVD released back in '97 has BOTH widesceen, and pan-and-scan formats on the same disc. However, a side by side comparison of both versions makes it appear that the film was shot in 35mm, thus you actually gain more picture by viewing the standard or "full screen" version. But you probably don't get the directors actual vision unless you view the 1.85:1 aspect ratio of the widescreen version.
Also, the first widescreen TV's to be released on the consumer market were out before the first few DVD's released in the spring of 1997. Widescreen shot movies had nothing at all to do with widescreen TV's. The first widescreen movies were shot that way to give the viewer a reason to leave home and the TV, and get them into the theater. It gave them something different to look at. It was first a competitive tool, then later became part of the artform.
2) Name your source... And quit listing opinions and guesses as if they were concrete facts. If a special edition of this particular movie is coming soon, I want to know where I can look up that information, so that I may find release dates, etc.
In regards to point number 1, while there is a letterboxed version of the movie on the DVD, it's non-anamorphic. That means it doesn't display properly on a widescreen TV. Instead, it displays as a postage stamp in the center of the screen if you don't want to stretch or distort it.
I think that was the point that was being made earlier.
Coincidentally enough, I've been thinking about this very subject: re-release of "The Black Stallion" as an updated DVD. The 25th anniversary has already passed. Perhaps the studio will do something special for the 30th anniversay in 2009. It sure is something to look forward to. I do have the movie on VHS tape but I'd probably better get the present DVD before it's unavailable if what was posted earlier is true.
But lucky gal that I am, I have my own beautiful Arabian horse to love, ride and take my breath away! ;D
It was this movie and the ensuing PR appearance of 'Cass Ole' at Arlingtion Racecourse in 1980 that gave me the impetus to seek out the Arab breed for my own horse. This black Arabian stallion was magnificent! He was gentle, friendly, coming to the fence to be touched and admired. He was quite the ham! I took 8mm film of him (this was before Video cameras) and it is one of my prized possessions...
Ditto on all counts, gsmishka. In addition, I'd like to see the equivalent of a Director's/Original Cut - on the 1997 release DVD, I could swear there are portions of scenes cut. In particular, during the shipwreck, isn't there a scene where Alec dives under the water to cut the rope and free THe Black from the rope pulling him into the propeller? I just watched this film again tonight and did NOT see it. I remember it vividly from my first viewing of the film in the theater in 1979, as well as on my VHS version of it. Another missing bit: the long search scene when the Black runs away - the DVD I have has a shortened version of the end of the scene, all the bit after Snoe tells Alec to go past a black barn and follow a "Morning Star." Am I hallucinating that there's a shot of Alec running past a signboard/advertisement for a "Morning Star" product?
At any rate, it seemed that nips and tucks had been taken out of the original in this less-than-stellar transfer. I'd love to see restoration of both visual and audio.
And while we're at it, just why is it that there has never been a release of the Black Stallion soundtrack on CD (I have it on vinyl from 1979)? That's some of the most beautiful soundtrack music written. Carmine Coppola made the perfect sound-meld with Ballard/Deschanel's vision, and left a haunting main theme for us all as well. Is FFC holding copyright tightly in his possession?
