Shades of Terrence Malick?

Emphasis on nature, minimal use of dialogue, simple, archetypal characters, highly fluid editing...it's got a very definite Malick vibe, and I wonder if Ballard was at all influenced by DAYS OF HEAVEN.

flowing water, plants growing underwater, sweeping and soaring cinematography.

The emphasis on water's role in life and death reminds me most of The Tree of Life. Yes, but, Terrence Malick's later work was probably influenced by Ballard and Caleb Deschanel's work here.
